- January 1
- Bulgaria and Romania complete the process of joining the Schengen Area, lifting land border controls.[1]
- Liechtenstein becomes the 37th country to legalize same-sex marriage.[2]
- Ukraine halts the transportation of Russian gas supplies through the country following the expiration of a five-year transit deal, while also becoming a state party in the International Criminal Court.[3][4]
- Fifteen people are killed (including the perpetrator) and 35 others are injured during a vehicle-ramming and shooting attack in New Orleans, United States.[5]
- Twelve people are killed and four more injured in a shooting in Cetinje, Montenegro.[6]
